My Screaming Frog workflow for quick audits
When a new client comes in, I run the same Screaming Frog crawl every time. Takes 15 minutes, catches 80% of technical issues.
The workflow:
- Crawl the site (default settings work fine)
- Export these tabs:
- Response Codes > Filter to 4xx and 5xx
- Page Titles > Filter to duplicates and missing
- Meta Description > Filter to duplicates and missing
- H1 > Filter to duplicates and missing
- Canonicals > Look for self-referencing issues
-
Indexability > Filter to non-indexable
-
Sort by inlinks (highest first). Priority = impact.
-
Create three lists:
- Quick fixes (metadata, broken links)
- Structural issues (canonicals, indexation)
- Requires dev work (redirects, speed)
The output is a prioritized checklist. Do quick fixes first, they show progress. Tackle structural issues next. Dev work goes into the sprint backlog.
No fancy tools needed. Just systematic.
